CHINESE YO-YO DEMONSTRATION FEATURED at THE NEWAMARKET HERITAGE
FESTIVAL: SEPTEMBER 21, 22, 23
The Chinese Folk Art Workshop, a Boston-based non-profit youth
organization that performs throughout New England, makes its
Heritage Festival debut. Their performance includes traditional folk
dances, giant lion drums, a Chinese dragon, and the amazing yo-yo or

INCA SON PRESENTS MUSIC AND DANCE OF THE ANDES at the HNEWMARKET
HERITAGE FESTIVAL, SEPTEMBER 21, 22, 23
The richness of Peruvian folklore comes to the festival stage with
internationally acclaimed music and dance ensemble, Inca Son.
Ancient melodies and dances, and colorful authentic attire transport

AKWAABA DRUM ENSEMBLE PERFORMA at the Newmarket HERITAGE FESTIVAL,
SEPTEMBER 21, 22, 23
Join Theo Martey and his friends for a drumming workshop Saturday,
September 22, at the Newmarket Heritage Festival. The ensemble has
been drumming and dancing together for many years in Ghana and the
United States. Today Theo is a master of West African drumming and
dance, a heritage that has many subtle variations in rhythmic
patterns, dance styles and clothing, all specific to a wide variety
of tribal groups from the region. For more info:

FUNKY DIVAS KICK OFF THE 10th ANNUAL NEWMARKET HERITAGE FESTIVAL,

The hand-clapping, toe-tapping gospel tunes of the Funky Divas mark

MURRAY IRISH DANCE ACADEMY DANCERS KICK UP THEIR HEELS AT HERITAGE

Dancers from the Murray Irish Dance Academy perform on the main

an international block party that includes West African drumming,
music of the Andes, Polish accordion traditions, and a Chinese yo-yo

includes headliners such as the internationally acclaimed Inca Son
playing music of the Andes and a debut performance by the astounding
Chinese Folk Art Workshop troupe with their spinning diabalos and
traditional dragon dance. Back by popular demand: the soul-inspiring
Voices from the Heart, the gospel tunes of the Funky Divas, the
exquisite harmonies of the 60-voice Granite Statesmen barbershop
chorus, and the ever-popular accordion warrior, Gary Sredzienski.
There will be Irish, Laotian, and Indian dance performances, a
demonstration by the award-winning Extreme Air Jump Rope Team,
presentations by local school children, and a Saturday night dance
party with the hugely popular Reminisants. Great meals include the
Friday soup and chowder fest, Saturday morning breakfast,
Best-of-the-Seacoast Dessert Buffet, Sunday morning brunch, and a
Sunday harvest supper. Other festival highlights: artisans at work,

NEWMARKET, NH—The
Seacoast’s favorite little international block party takes place
September 21-23—and you’re invited! Don’t miss this annual
celebration of arts, culture, history, and community spirit—right in
downtown Newmarket.
HIGHLIGHTS
Highlights of the 10th
annual Newmarket Heritage Festival include internationally acclaimed
Inca Son playing music of the Andes, the Chinese Folk Art
Workshop with their astonishing, spinning diabalos and
traditional dragon dance, and the Akwaaba Ensemble, which
fills the stage with the rhythms of Africa. Back by popular demand
are the soul-inspiring Voices from the Heart, the gospel
tunes of the Funky Divas, the exquisite harmonies of the
50-voice Granite Statesmen Barbershop Chorus, and the
ever-popular accordion warrior, Gary Sredzienski. There will
be Irish, Laotian, and Indian dance performances,
presentations by local school children, a demonstration by the
award-winning Extreme Air Jump Rope Team, and a Saturday
night dance party with the Reminisants, one of the most
popular dance bands in New England. Other activities and events
include artisans at work, a participatory barn raising, live farm
animals to meet, feed and learn about, an on-board tour of a Coast
Guard vessel, a climbing wall, kayaking and rowing on the river, a
model train exhibit, cooking demonstrations, drumming and dance

FESTIVAL LINE-UP
The Heritage Festival
welcomes a host of great performers to the stage this year. The
weekend gets off to a rollicking start on Friday, September 21,
with the popular International Soup and Chowder Fest (Friday,
5:30-7:00 pm) and a performance by the beloved Funky Divas of
Gospel (Friday, 7:15-8:30 pm). Then, head up Zion’s Hill to
Newmarket’s famous Stone Church for more music with Gary Sredzienski
and his surf rock band, The Serfs (Friday, 9:00-11:00 pm).
Saturday, September
22, kicks off with the School to Career Partnership Breakfast
(Saturday, 9:30-11:00) and Voices from the Heart (Saturday,
10:30-11:30) singing African-American spirituals, Korean songs of
unity, South African anti-apartheid songs, Macedonian love songs—and
more. The Akwaaba Drum Ensemble (Saturday, 2:00-2:45) in full
traditional dress, brings the rhythms of Africa to the festival
stage. The Accordion Warrior, Gary Sredzienski, returns to
the festival with all his accordions, stories, and great music
(Saturday, 12:15-1:15).
The Murray Irish
Dancers are back to kick up their heels (Saturday, 3:15-3:45).
The stunning beauty of traditional Indian Dance (Saturday,
4:15-5:00) is new to the festival this year. R.P. Hale will offer
his harpsichord demonstration and concert (Saturday,
5:00-5:45). And the talents of the Chinese Folk Art Workshop
will astonish with their spinning diabolos, dragon dance, and more
(Saturday, 5:45-7:00). Saturday evening kicks off with the
incredible Best Dessert of the Seacoast Bake-Off, a
fundraiser for Project Graduation (Saturday, 7:00-9:00). And The
Reminisants play classic dance music for all generations for the
Saturday night Dance Party (Saturday, 7:30-10:00).
Sunday, September 23,
opens with the ever-popular Extreme Air Sunday Brunch
(Sunday, 10:00-12:00) and a performance by the award-winning
Extreme Air Jump Rope Team (Sunday, 11:00-11:30). The beloved
50-voice Granite Statesmen Barbershop Chorus returns with
Broadway tunes and American favorites (Sunday, 12:00-1:00).
Newmarket’s Laotian community presents their story in Laotian
Journey (Sunday, 1:45-2:30). Paul Joyce and his Honky Tonkin’
Guitar will perform (Sunday, 2:30-3:15). The Children’s
Musical Medley features students from the Newmarket Elementary
School chorus and band (Sunday, 3:15-4:00). The festival closes with
the internationally acclaimed Inca Son, in full traditional
dress, playing music of the Andes (Sunday, 4:30-6:30).
GREAT WORKSHOPS!
The Heritage Festival
is all about celebrating culture—and you can be more than an
audience member! Give it a try and learn new things at a festival
workshop or demonstration. Saturday activities include: the
Akwaaba African Drumming Workshop (Saturday, 11:30-12:15),
Music Making with Captain Fiddle (Saturday, 1:15-2:00), an
African Cooking Demonstration (Saturday, 2:45-3:15), an Irish
Dance Workshop (Saturday, 3:45-4:15), an Indian Cooking
Demonstration (Saturday, 5:00-5:45). On Sunday, join Jeff Warner
for Banjos, Bones and Ballads: Folk Music for Families Workshop
(Sunday, 1:00-1:45), try a hands-on Heritage Festival Barn
Raising (Sunday, 3:00-4:30) with timbersmith Al Smith and a
Greek Baklava Demonstration (Sunday, 4:00-4:30).
STROLLING MUSICIANS AND PERFORMERS
The Granite
Statesmen Barbershop Quartets fill the festival grounds with
four-part harmony (Sunday, 1:30-4:30.) The Brett and Jenny
Juggling Team is back with dazzling tricks and friendly tips,
complete with flying balls, twirling bowling pins, a unicycle, and
more (Saturday and Sunday throughout the day). Dick Kaplan’s
Excellent Jazz Band specializes in jazz, swing and classic rock
(Sunday, 1-4). Strolling Accordion and Fiddle Minstrel Ryan
Thomson, a.k.a Captain Fiddle (Saturday, 11-1, 2:30-3:30) and
Washboard Minstrel Leif Gerjuoy (Saturday, 11-2) are both back
with their multi-instrumental talents and wonderful rhythms and
tunes.
SPECIAL EVENTS
The festival offers a
host of special events you won’t want to miss.
New this year:
Participate in a Heritage Festival barn-raising of a
post-and-beam replica of Thoreau’s Walden Pond cabin, built by
Newmarket timber framer Al Smith (Sunday, 3-4:30). Meet a real
farmer and feed the live animals in the Travelin’ Barnyard
agricultural display (Saturday, 9:30-5). Climb aboard a Coast
Guard Vessel (Sunday, 10-5). Stop in for a Story in the
Library Children’s Room (Saturday, 10-4; Sunday, 11-4). Or stop by
the Library Book Sale for a great selection of used books
(Sat. 10-4; Sun. 10-4). Enjoy a scenic boat ride, provided by the
Newmarket Conservation Commission (Saturday, 9-3; Sunday, 9-3:30).
Back by popular
demand: The Bristol S-Gauge Club’s incredible Model Railway
returns in the American Legion Hall. Get out on the Lamprey River in
a kayak or an Echo Rowing shell. (EMS staff and Echo Rowing
representatives will be on hand to assist.) Kids will love the
Giant Rock Climbing Wall (Saturday, 12-5; Sunday 12-5). Other
special events include the popular Downtown Walking Tour,
Cheswell Burial Ground Tour, and Historic Mill Tour, offered once
each day.
And don’t miss
Merchants of Main Street: A Historic Retrospective. Take a
stroll back through time and learn about the commerce and industry
of Newmarket’s past, presented by the Lamprey Arts & Culture
Alliance (LACA). The exhibit showcases a combination of images and
artifacts from the archives of the New Market Historical Society,
and features both the folkloric art of Eduoard Langlois and mixed
media interpretations by Shaune McCarthy. (Sat, 12-5; Sun, 11-3.)
And don’t forget to
head up Zion’s Hill to The Stone Church where there’s a
weekend of fabulous music being offered in conjunction with the
Heritage Festival, including the Serfs, a Say Zuzu Reunion Show,
Nate Wilson and Tab Benoit. All shows feature discounts for festival

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES
The festival includes
loads of great activities for kids. (Adults can try, too!)
Decorate eggs with hot wax and dye (pysanky), an original form
of Ukrainian folk art. Create a festive jester hat or get
your face painted by the experts from Newmarket’s Aryaloka
Buddhist Center. Bring teddy bears to Lamprey Health Care’s Teddy
Bear Clinic. Meet Nellie the Chihuahua from the NHSPCA.
Try spinning, felting and weaving. Help paint a Community
Mural! Create oil pastel florals or try your hand at
drawing faces. Learn what lurks in Great Bay and make a
cool whirlygig with members of the Great Bay Discovery
Center. Study real whale bones brought to you by the Seacoast
Science Center. It’s all under the Heritage Festival Children’s
Tent.
GREAT FOOD!
Don’t miss the great
community meals throughout the weekend: the Friday night Soup and
Chowder Fest; the Saturday morning School to Career
Partnership Program Breakfast; the Saturday night Project
Graduation Best Dessert of the Seacoast Bake-Off; the Sunday
morning Extreme Air Sunday Brunch, and the Sunday night
Community Church Harvest Supper. Plus, visit the great food
vendors, selling everything from Italian meatballs, subs, soup,
kielbasa, tofu sausage, sandwiches, popcorn and pastries, iced
coffee and more.
HOURS and ADMISSION
Hours: Friday:
5:30-11; Saturday: 9:30-10; Sunday: 10-7. Festival admission
is $5 for the entire weekend (excluding meals); children under 12
are free. Buttons are available on site at the festival. They are
also at the Newmarket Public Library (659.5311), the Newmarket Town
Hall (659.3617), and the Newmarket Community Center (659.8581).
LOCATION and PARKING
Location: This
year’s festival takes place in the large parking area adjacent to
the Newmarket Public Library at the corner of Route 108 and Elm
Street on the northern end of the downtown village area. Other
festival venues include Schanda Park on the Lamprey River, the
Gallery at Ampers& Studio, the American Legion, the Community
Church, the Stone Church, the Stone School Museum, and the Library.
A free festival trolley will run continuously on Saturday and
Sunday to shuttle people between offsite parking locations and all
the festival venues. The show goes on, rain or shine—there are lots
of tents! Parking: Parking is available at the festival site,
with overflow parking available at the Newmarket Junior/Senior High
School (Route 152). The free festival trolley will run on a regular
basis among parking areas on Saturday and Sunday.
